How To Watercolor With Soft Pastels. Yes, we can use watercolor with pastels and water. I was inspired to try this technique, which is showcased on pages 118-119 of the 2024-2025 Stampin’Up! ® Catalog.
At first, I was not a fan of it all, but it was because I was not using enough water. So, it can be a little of a learning curve, but it is worth the try.
I love the result of the pastels and water. It sure is a soft finish. Give it a try to see the result.

In this video, I will share how to watercolor with soft pastels. The stamp set used is the Spotlight On Nature.
Pastel Watercolor on Spotlight On Nature
The finished result is soft, as you can see in the picture of watercolor with pastel. I will be honest and say that at first, I was not impressed with my watercolor pastel result, but after a few tries, I am in love with it. The one thing I did wrong was not adding enough water.
Measurements
- Basic Black 8-½ x 5-½ score at 4-¼, 3-¼ x 4-½, ¾ x 2-½
- Poppy Parade 4 x 5-¼ embossed with distressed tile.
- Watercolor paper 3 x 4-¼, scrap for butterfly
- Basic White ⅝ x 2-½, 5-¼ x 8 score at 4 for card insert.
Q & A: Can I use basic white cardstock for watercolor with pastels? You can, but for the best result, it is best on watercolor paper. Basic Card stock doesn’t absorb water like watercolor paper. Watercolor paper is cotton, so it absorbs, and you can let it dry and add more, while the regular cardstock, after adding more water, will get a hold in the paper.
Inside, I color the butterfly with pastels and use a blender pen. (I prefer the water painter, but it is possible to use a blender pen. ***Blender Pen is different from the Stampin’Blends)
Recipe to refill blender pen
When the blender pens are getting dry, we can refill them. here the recipe
- ¼ teaspoon rubbing alcohol (70% works good)
- 2 teaspoons of glycerin (found in pharmacy dept.)
- 4 teaspoons of distilled water
Put in a small container (medication container, shooter glass work great). Soak one end overnight, and the next morning, soak the other end for a few hours.
